I’ve seen rocking horses built from Pine, Maple, Oak, Walnut, and Cherry just to name a few types of wood. Pine is very popular due to the fact that it’s a soft wood, easy to work with, and is fairly inexpensive.

Also, keep in mind that not all wood project plans are created equal. Make sure you get a set of woodworker plans that is easy to read, has plenty of details, and good visual examples. That in it self, will go a long way toward helping you create an awesome rocking horse that you can be proud to give away.
